Hi Everyone,

FEAST is back by popular demand and this year promises to be even feastier. Last year, Mighty Meaty put together an awe inspiring run to the championship that we all remember as one of the greatest victories in sports history! In addition to the world class athleticism, there was also glow-in-the dark night frisbee, greased watermelons, beer pong, dance parties and much more that cannot be mentioned nor remembered.

This year's FEAST will be held on May 29-31 at Tiwi Beach and headquartered back at Swahili House, where we had such a great time last year. Monday, May 31st is Memorial Day for Americans and June 1st is Madaraka Day, so hopefully everyone has at least one of those days as a holiday.

As in year's past, teams will be organized to provide the greatest balance of skill levels based upon registration. This has worked out well the last three years and all games have been amazingly well matched.

More details regarding the format, rules, etc will be forthcoming.

ACCOMMODATIONS

As I mentioned, the HQ of the tournament will be Swahili House (http://www.swahilihouse.com/intro/intro.htm). There are a limited number (23) spaces available to stay for Saturday (29th), Sunday (30th) and Monday (31st) nights. The cost per person/per night will depend on the level of room, but will range from 3,000 KES to 5,500 KES (staff all inclusive, self-catering). Room choices and availability will be allotted on a first come first serve basis. To confirm your spot in the house, kindly email Kaarli at NOSPAM-kaarlik@gmail.com and provide a deposit of KES 6,000 to Kaarli. We expect the available spaces to go fast, so for those in Nairobi who want a spot they should bring cash on Friday or Sunday to our regular game.

Alternatively, Twiga Lodge (www.twigalodge.com), 100m down the beach from Swahili House, offers camping for which we don't need reservations (cost is 300 KES person/night - bring your own tent). They also have budget rooms available for KES 2,000/night and bigger rooms facing the sea, with breakfast, for KES 4,500/night. Contact +254 (0)721 577 614 to make reservations.

Our minister of housing has some more information for you. We have already filled up Swahili House so currently the best other option is:

Twiga Lodge on Tiwi Beach (www.twigalodge.com): contact +254 (0)721 577 614 to make reservations for a room (budget rooms are 2,000/- Kshs/person/night and bigger rooms facing the ocean are4,500/- Kshs/person/night inclusive of breakfast). You can also camp there -- no reservations are required for pitching your own tent: cost is 300/- Kshs/person/night. Twiga Lodge is 100m down the beach from Swahili House. Note that reservations ARE REQUIRED for the rooms and as of late last week rooms were still available.

I am still looking into other options but suggest that reservations are made at Twiga to secure a space for now if you want to ensure you have a room.

REGISTRATION

To register send us your Team's and Captain's names and transfer a team fee of US$280 via Paypal to cah2129@gmail.com. Please contact Craig at cah2129@gmail.com with any questions of if alternate arrangements are necessary. Teams should not exceed 10 people. Fees cover: game food, first aid, security, water, Saturday night party (one drink and BBQ dinner included). The deadline for registration is March 20. Any profits go to charity.

Hi Folks,
For the new folks who are finding us for the first time via this Blog let me just repost the basics:

We play every Friday at 16:30 and Sunday at 16:00. We play at the International School for Kenya (ISK) on the upper field. Its a very casual pick up game and its all about fun.

Its an informal coed game so bring your friends...the regulars will teach you all you need to know at the game. To get to ISK take Poponi Rd from Westlands toward Spring Valley. You will go past Thigiri Ridge Rd ...continue straight up the hill. You will come to a cross road with Ngecha....go straight. after about 1km you will see ISK on your right. Don't go into the main entrance. Instead keep driving straight (stay on the paved road) and follow the wall of the school up the hill. You will have to park on the outside of the gate (should be other cars there on the left). Head into the gate and walk to your left. you will see a playground before some fields....we'll be on those fields.

All adults are welcome!

Hello Kenya Ultimate scene!

The NUFF (Nairobi Ultimate Frisbee Fest) is returning again this year but this time with a new format!
The tournament will be held again at the ISK and pencil down May 24th,25th 2008 on your calendar.

WE ARE GOING FOR THE REAL DEAL THIS YEAR!!!!
Meaning a 7 a side tournie, full pitch, with Round Robin on Saturday followed up by a big Saturday night party.
Elimination round will follow on the Sunday.

The NUFF organizers are seeking for helpers at the moment.

FUNN in NUFF

Last Saturday the Nairobi Ultimate Frisbee Fest 2007 ( NUFF) was held on the ISK fields .

This year's edition (2nd) was a true success.

Nice jump!

Over 80 people played Ultimate and for about 20 of them it was their first time.
During the festivities, Ian, Kevin, Josée and Thomas ran a clinic for beginners which really helped newcomers in knowing the basics of the sport. It created a good environement for learning and integrating guys like the kids from Kibera who showed great spirit and amazing skills troughout!

It's under a clear sky that our 6 tribes played hard, fair and demonstrated great spirit.

The Samburus won the title 5-3 over the Luos in a very exhausting final!!!
Each team member of the Samburus received a Disc of the tournament for their victory.

Proud winners SAMBURU

The NUFF was able to raise 50 000 ksh for The NGO Carolina for Kibera which helps people in Kibera by providing health care, support to the population. CFK is also in the process of putting up a clinic in the area. 15 kids from CFK played with us and were very thankfull of our support. Thanks to Salim who organized the team!

Nairobi Ultimate Frisbee Fest 2007

Frisbee is a fast-paced team sport enjoyed by adults and children around the world. Though played with a flying disc, Frisbee combines elements of soccer, football and basketball. It’s easy to learn and play. All you need is a patch of grass, a disc and a couple of friends. Come join us for a day of fun!

First NUT is a success!!!!

Last Saturday at ISK was the first ever Nairobi Ultimate Tournament.

Over 50 people gathered around the disc to play an exciting tournament where spirit, participation and competition met to make the NUT a great experience. The organizers of the 2006 NUT would like to thank you for your participation in Nairobi's first-ever Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

We are already looking forward to NUT 2007 and we welcome any comments you might have about how NUT 2007 chould be run differently than this year's version. We will also consider holding clinics and other special events in between time for those of you looking to pollish your technique or strategy.

We sincerely hope that all of you will join us every Friday (at ISK, 16:00 - 18:00) for great weekly Ultimate that is full of good spirit and plenty of running. The calibre is usually a little higher than what we saw on Saturday, but beginners don't worry, we introduce new folk gently. So come on out and join us, get some exercise, and have some fun. Heck, bring a friend!

The REDS
From the six colourfull teams, The Reds came out strong and were the winners of this first edition of the NUT. Red and Grey teams gave us a good show in the final, as the Grey team came back from a 0-3 deficit to tie it up at 3-3, with Bobby pulling off the catch of the tournament to score after Mike had batted away the original pass.
Unfortunatly for them the Red team had more energy to finally close the game by a score of 7-5. Bravo!

In addition to contributing to a full day of Ultimate, you helped us raise KSH 30,000 for Dawn of Literacy and build the profile of Ultimate in Nairobi. Steve gets an honourable mention (and a keychain when we see him next) for wearing the best hat to our hat tournament. Recognition for the person that took their time under pressure and did not rush their actions goes to cook who did the burgers during lunchtime.

This is a reminder that you are signed up for the first ever Nairobi Ultimate Tournament (NUT) THIS Saturday at the International School of Kenya (ISK). Please bring your entry fee of KSH 1000 for which you will receive a NUT T-shirt and upwards of 4 Ultimate games. Registration and team briefings begin at 8:30 am with first hucks scheduled for no later than 9:30 am. We envisage the event wrapping up by 4:00 pm. Please see the attached map for directions to the ISK.

Please note that this is what is called a hat tournament. This means that entrants are mixed into teams picked out of different hats, one hat for advanced players, one hat for intermediate players and one hat for beginners. Teams should be evenly matched and, with a focus on fun rather than winning, this is an ideal opportunity for beginners to learn the game and for advanced players to attract more people to Ultimate in Nairobi. In this spirit of the tournament, please bring a hat to wear. There will be a celebration of the most fun hat worn during play.

We have organized catering at the event so that you can eat. Please note that YOU will have to pay for the food, but the prices are reasonable. We will have free water at the event, but from big jugs, so please bring your own water bottle. We will also have a nanny on hand to help look after little ones if you want to play but don't want to abandon your child while doing so!

SPIRIT OF THE GAME
From the Official Rules of Ultimate 10th Edition

"Spirit of the Game - Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional fouling, or other "win-at-all-costs" behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players."

ULTIMATE IN 10 SIMPLE RULES

Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

The Field -- A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards (64 m) by 40 yards (37 m), with endzones 25 yards (23 m) deep.

Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team.

Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.

Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.

Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.

Substitutions -- Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.

Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.

Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.

Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.

Attention all Ultimate Frisbee Fans

Sign up for the Kenya International Ultimate Tournament on Saturday, May 20, 2006.

When? Saturday May 20th @ 9:00 am.

There will be an information session for captains at 9:00 am and a concurrent session for other registrants to review the basic rules. Hucks for the first game are at 9:30 am.

Format: "Hat" style tournament where teams are picked out of different hats. Players are asked to grade themselves based on experience (A,B or C level) and their names will be placed in respective hats to ensure team parity.

Now, how do I know if I am an A, B or C player?

A Player: Someone who has played for at least a year and has experience in either tournaments or a league
B Player: Someone who has played a few times and who knows the basic rules of Ultimate
C Player: Someone with very little or no experience.

Tournament organizers will designate team captains from the most experienced players who register.

Depending on the final number of registrations, we hope to have teams of 7 players and play 5 on 5. We will seek a composition of 3 guys, 2 gals on the field at any one time with 1 guy and 1 gal sub each.

A tournament schedule will be produced prior to game day and posted on the linked blog site. We envisage at least 4 games of one hour long for each team and up to 5 for those that make it to the finals

Cost: Ksh 1000. Registration fee includes t shirt and water. All proceeds
to go to a charitable cause (yet to be determined).
